I’ll Never Forget that First Adjustment!

Janis Laking

“It was incredible,” continues Chiropractor Janis Laking. “I’ll never forget that first adjustment. It was as if a huge weight was suddenly lifted from my shoulders, for the first time I had been given hope that I could get well after a year of not working due to injury. That’s when I decided I wanted to be a chiropractor and to help others who might be in pain and had given up hope”.

Chiropractic Education & Training

Getting back on her feet, Chiropractor Janis Laking decided to retrain and joined the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth as a mature student to begin her education and training. Here she studied for four years biochemistry, anatomy and human physiology, X-ray, diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care. After graduating in 1996 Chiropractor Janis Laking established a practice in Bournemouth.

On a Personal Note

She met her husband at the Chiropractic College and she has one child called Michael. He was quite poorly during the early years of his life which spurred both her and her husband to get involved with paediatric chiropractic care and to study further, both achieving a Master of Science Degree in Paediatrics in 2007. Janis also has an interest in property renovation and helping others with interior design.

I was so impressed…I decided to become a Chiropractor

My first occupation was farming, and my first experience of chiropractic was for treatment for low back pain as a result of the constant heavy lifting and twisting I did every day on the farm. Having time off when you work on a farm is not an option, and I was so impressed with the results and the benefits I received from my chiropractor that I decided to be one!!

Journey to becoming a Chiropractor

I first had to study for 3 years at night school to obtain the science qualifications which led subsequently to my 5 year full time course at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth. I graduated with an MSc in Chiropractic in 1999, and I have found every minute of meeting and treating people exciting and the results gained through chiropractic using my hands exhilarating. Further studies gained me another MSc, this time in Chiropractic Paediatrics. My youngest patient is 7 hours old and my oldest is 90yrs old.

Away from the Clinic

I am interested in flying and have now achieved my private pilots license. Our son is now training to be a commercial pilot.  I am also interested in spitfires and Lancaster, and I have built a spitfire with a group of friends.read more»

Every day I look forward to going to work and there are not many people that can say that about their job, but I do, and I consider myself lucky to be able to do something I enjoy – helping people get well – and stay well.

I have been having Chiropractic treatment since I was 12 years old and I can still remember my first adjustment. I had back pain for weeks and it was a huge relief!

I couldn’t believe how much better I felt and I became instantly interested in how chiropractic helped people.

From that moment I wanted to become a Chiropractor and help other people. I am now living my dream and I love what I do.

I was a member of a jujitsu club for many years earning my green belt, and I suffered a few injuries along the way, which were always treated by my Chiropractor – I found it improved my performance!

I am interested in the many ways that Chiropractic can help professional athletes and everyone who enjoys the many different types of sport available whether children or adults as chiropractic is for everyone.

Outside of Chiropractic I am interested in music and acting and enjoy the theatre.

My first adjustment was when I sought relief from the daily headaches and neck pain that I was suffering from. I experienced immediate relief and was amazed at the benefits of chiropractic care, and the difference it made to my day to day life, which only served for me to learn more and be able to help others. I have always wanted to be part of a profession where I can help people and love treating patients and encountering the positive results gained from chiropractic care.

I graduated in Bournemouth, from the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic with a 1st Class BSc (Hons) Human Sciences degree and Masters in Chiropractic with Merit.

My experience is with people of all ages. I have treated infants and children participated in feeding clinics. At the other end of the spectrum because I am a keen sportswoman I have treated semi-professional rugby players at a local rugby club!

I am also keen on running, especially along the beach! I have completed four half marathons and next plan on training for a full marathon, so I understand the problems that runners suffer from and chiropractic is great for feet and knees as well!
