World Cancer Day February 4th

Almost all of us will have had our lives affected by cancer in some way. Whether it’s a family member, friend or work colleague, we all know someone who has suffered with cancer. Research shows that in 2014 there were 356,860 new cases of cancer reported and there were 163,444 deaths from cancer. The rate of surviving cancer for 10 or more years is currently 50% and worryingly 42% of cancers in the UK are actually preventable (Cancer Research UK).

So what can you do?

We all know that smoking causes cancer but there are many other causes, for example exposure to asbestos, age, genetics and lifestyle choices. Did you know that the chance of developing some cancers is increased by obesity, lack of exercises, drinking too much alcohol and even eating too much red meat?

The best way that you can protect yourself and you loved ones from cancer is to live a healthy lifestyle. Below are some of the best things you can do:
World Cancer Day

  • Maintain a normal body weight
  • Do 30 minutes of physical activity a day – do something you like, wether that’s the gym, going for a run or just a brisk walk!
  • Limit high-calorie foods and sugary drinks
  • Eat at least five portions of fruit or veg a day… this is one we’ve all been told as children but the science is there to support it as these foods are high in fiber and nutrients and low in calories!
  • Limit red meat and avoid processed meat
  • Limit your alcoholic drinks
  • Eat a low salt diet

February 4th is World Cancer Day and at Castle Lane Clinic we are supporting Cancer Research UK in their #ActOfUnity campaign. They are selling unity bands for a suggested donation of just £2, which will go towards life saving research… If you would like to help you can buy your unity band or donate using the link below!
